Rotating mechanism concept selection, dynamic mechanical design, servo-drive integration and commissioning support for an industrial printing application

Commissioned high-speed print wheel rig with the servo drive mounted to the rotating assembly.
Overview
Development of a high-speed industrial print wheel system for a specialist printing application. The work included concept development, rotating mechanism design, servo-drive integration, dynamic behaviour assessment, structural verification, material handling, assembly documentation and commissioning support.
Engineering Challenge
The system required a robust and repeatable rotating mechanism capable of operating at high speed while maintaining print accuracy, mechanical stability and reliable material handling. The design also needed to remain practical to manufacture, assemble, maintain and operate safely in an ink-contaminated industrial environment.
Engineering Scope
- Proposed and selected a rotating print wheel concept instead of a linear mechanism.
- Designed the rotating assembly, support structure and drive integration.
- Selected the servo motor, encoder and coupling based on speed, stiffness, inertia and control-stability requirements.
- Specified bearings and protective sealing for high-speed operation in an ink-contaminated environment.
- Designed the material holding and clamping approach for repeatable printing during rotation.
- Produced assembly, user, maintenance and safety documentation to support build, operation and commissioning.

Dynamic and Mechanical Design
The design was developed around the dynamic behaviour of a high-speed rotating system. Coupling stiffness, rotational inertia, mass distribution and bearing arrangement were considered to reduce the risk of control instability, vibration and resonance within the operating speed range.

Implementation and Outcome
- Delivered a robust high-speed rotating print wheel mechanism for an industrial printing application.
- The rotating print wheel concept was adopted and implemented for the application.
- The system remains in operational use.
- Demonstrated full-system mechanical engineering capability, combining concept selection, rotating machinery design, drive integration, dynamic behaviour assessment, structural verification and practical commissioning support.
